A community rallies to save an abused kitten.

By Debra White

A gray tabby kitten shivered at the edge of a gas station on a bleak December afternoon in 2007. A driver slowing for a light was stunned by the kitten's condition: Her nose was scraped raw, and her ears had been cut. The Good Samaritan scooped up the bundle of gray fur and headed for the Humane Society of Kent County in Grand Rapids, Mich., about 25 miles away.

"The injury to her ears was intentional," says veterinary medical director Wendy Swift, who performed emergency surgery. "She also suffered a hernia, due to being hit or kicked." No one knows how the kitten ended up at the gas station.
