"Lump on chest” was the brief description in the meeting book for my 4 p.m. appointment. Todd Pechter noticed a small, firm lump on his cat, Kina, a 13-year-old spayed domestic shorthair. He wasn’t sure how long it was there; he noticed it only four days before.

When examined, Kina appeared to be in excellent health, except for a small, firm mass in the second mammary gland on the left side of her chest. Her seven other mammary glands felt normal. I told Mr. Pechter that I believed this was a mammary tumor that needed surgery as soon as possible.
