A Litter of Stars

Meet the new kittens at the Hemingway Home.

By Dusty Rainbolt

Exciting things are afoot at the Hemingway Home and Museum in Key West, Fla. On May 9, 2006, seven new Hemingway kittens entered the world. Word is that Louisa May Alcott recently gave birth at the Hemingway House. Although you may remember Alcott as the author of Little Women, this Louisa is a descendent of the cats author Ernest Hemingway owned when he lived at the home. Ironically, the father is named Truman Capote.

Museum staff members call the litter’s only boy Shine, after Hemingway’s friend and sparring partner (Kermit “Shine” Forbes). They named the six girls: Marlena (Dietrich), Greta (Garbo), Agnes (Moorehead), Rita (Hayworth), Mae (West) and Hadley (Richardson Hemingway — after his first wife).
