When Joan Shuyler began feeding a hungry group of cats that live near her work, she never would have guessed that a few months later she and her family would become rescuers and foster parents to more than 50 felines.

“In May [2007], Joan emailed Town Cats and said she wanted advice about how to help these cats,” says Rosi Mirko, founder of Town Cats, a Morgan Hill, Calif., no-kill feline rescue and trap-neuter-return (TNR) organization. “I wrote her back that the cats needed to be trapped and neutered, so we loaned her traps and got her involved in a low-cost spay and neuter program. There were 20 cats, which are all fixed now. She rescued 14 kittens, which she and her husband fostered themselves. They took responsibility for the whole project, and I just gave them the tools and the training. Joan totally took it on and didn’t flinch.”
