Hurricane Katrina Cats

Buddy’s Five-State Odyssey

Feline Rescue and Rehome reunites a family displaced by Hurricane Katrina with their beloved cat.

By T. Wayne Waters

When Hurricane Katrina blasted New Orleans, thousands of pets were stranded. Cheri Kaltenbach and her 6-year-old daughter Bryce, however, were able to take their 6-month-old orange tabby Buddy with them when they headed with a friend for higher ground in Vicksburg, Miss., just a few days before Katrina hit. The friends soon separated, he by truck to a brother in Orlando, Fla., the Kaltenbachs by bus to cousins in Phoenix, Ariz. The bus line wouldn’t allow cats on-board, so Cheri asked her friend to take Buddy with him to Orlando. He obliged. Cheri and Bryce made the long road trip to Phoenix.

Many thanks to Cat Fancy for running this terrific story! Bryce and Cheri are very special people, and we are thrilled that they and Buddy are back home in New Orleans. - Sharon Morris, FuRR Volunteer
