Inside the Feline Mind

Your cat might be smarter than you think.

By Rebecca Sweat

Your cat sits on a favorite window ledge, staring out into your backyard with a look of intense concentration. If it were a human, you’d say it was thinking about something really profound — the meaning of life or how to bring about world peace. But your cat’s just a cat. They don’t really think about things ... or do they?

“Cats certainly can think,” says John Wright, a certified applied animal behaviorist and psychology professor at Mercer University in Macon, Ga. Not only that, he says, “most cats are extremely capable problem solvers. Cats know how to size up a situation and then act on the information received.”

I agree that "cats certainly can think". There are times when I know exactly what my cat is thinking, especially when she's thinking about something she wants me to do for her, such as turning on the water for a drink in the shower stall. But other times..... For example, she used to get on the back of a certain chair in the living room and stare at a painting on the wall, and stare, and stare. Was she wishing herself inside the painting? practicing to be an art critic? having a Zen moment? Or was she just trying to drive me crazy wondering WHAT she was thinking?!

There is no doubt in my mind that cats are smart, my Mittens is a rather smart girl and knows just how to use her mind. And she diffidently sizes up things and then moves on to what she thinks is the best way to go...and she is always right.
