CAT FANCY Breed Profile: Burmese

Southeast Asia gives America a jewel.

By Elisa Jordan

The sliding door to the storage room had been locked for about six or seven years. Peepers, the precocious Burmese, couldn't be trusted not to open it. During recent work on the house, however, Michigan breeder Judith Kollmann couldn't find a certain piece of furniture and quickly opened the door in an effort to find it.

"I opened the door, looked around, spotted the piece of furniture I was looking for, and I shut the door behind me," Kollmann says. "peepers was looking at the door with her eyes open in fascination. I walked past her, having shut the door and checked where the piece of furniture was — she was already seated on her plump little behind with both of her paws on the door and gently sliding it open. The whole thing took maybe 10 seconds. Her memory immediately clicked: That door does open, and I'm going to do it right now!"

By far the most accommodating, easiest to handle on trips. She loves to cuddle and feels at ease with anyone.
