Flower essences can calm your cat's emotions.

By Helen Jablonski

Everyone needs a little extra support at times, and our cats are no exception. From a trip to the veterinarian to the loss of another pet, cats - who prefer structure and routine - can get upset by any change to their normal day, whether big or small.

When cats face emotional imbalances, holistic veterinarians often prescribe flower essences: dilute infusions of specific flowers that affect the mental and emotional state.

Dear Editor,

I was delighted to see an entire article dedicated to flower essences! I've been giving my multi-cat household essences in drinking water since the early 1990s with wonderful results. I bought several books on flower essences. My essence collection numbers over 200. Bach essences are only a beginning.

"Flower essence practitioners" train professionally to do it for a living.

While most flower essence companies are humans 1st, animals 2nd, one company, Anaflora, is animals 1st, humans 2nd. My "bible" is Sharon Callahan's (Anaflora) "Healing Animals Naturally" (ISBN 0965379612). Essences are particularly good on very young, elders, exhausted, stressed, feral or suffering animals. Essences help the "soul" of the animal.

Alas, vets don't offer flower essences as part of their healing toolbox. It hasn't caught on yet.
