Drawn to Cats

Artist and cartoonist John A. Wilcox owes his career to cats.

By Anne Leighton

When asked if a particular picture is of a cat, John A. Wilcox responded, “It is whatever you see it as.”

Cats play an integral part in this artist/writer/musician’s life; he’s always had them. He feeds the strays outside his Connecticut home. Inside, his partner-in-life is a gorgeous gray and white tabby named Dolomite, who walks on Wilcox’s head and fetches. The artist is more famous in comic circles for painting characters and writing books such as “Felix the Cat.” He also writes literature, paints and makes music in the band Wilcox/Benigno for a living … and pleasure.
