My Own Spot

How to choose furniture you and your cats will love.

By Therese Ciesinski

The day the cat tower arrived felt like Christmas. The cats instinctively knew that this 5-foot-tall, shag-carpeted bad boy was for them, and they stormed it with gusto. Skid, the youngest, defended the highest perch from Shiloh, while 18-year-old Mumble commandeered the ground floor “room.” Soon, each had claimed a spot, and all were comfortably asleep.

“Cats can benefit from having a place of their own,” says Mary Klinck, a veterinary resident in behavioral medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. “In particular, nervous or timid cats, or those in multiple pet homes or homes with a lot of activity [such as households with small children] often need a quiet, safe place to retreat to.”
