Cats with Asthma

Help for Asthmatic Cats

A change in cat litter may help alleviate symptoms.

By Dusty Rainbolt

For cats with asthma, several natural options can help make life easier. Susan Little, a veterinarian, and president of the Winn Feline Foundation, suggests reducing the amount of irritants the cat is exposed to, such as cigarette and fireplace smoke, and air fresheners. In addition, she recommends switching your cat’s litter to a low-dust clay litter or one that is made from an alternative material.

Some natural remedies might make your asthmatic cat more comfortable, but they are not a substitute for medical attention, especially if your cat faces an asthma emergency. The Bach flower remedies Cherry Plum and Rock Rose frequently help cats with breathing difficulties. Your cat need not swallow the remedy. It can be absorbed through the gums, lips and tongue or even massaged into the tips of the ears.

How do I know if my cat is having an asthma emergency?

My cat has asthma and needs to use inhalers on occasion(Flovent and Abuterol), I find when the weather is changing or when the heat goes on are when his Atyham seems to act up. To avoid using the inhalers I have put him in my bathroom with the doors closed, all vents covered, no fan and the hot water running creating a lot of steam. I keep him in thier for 10 minutes. He can beathe great and he actually looks to go in the bathroom whenever I go to shower. He obviously gets relief. He resisted at first but, has come to like it.
