Helping Cats Fight Cancer

There are many ways the battle against feline cancer is being fought.

By Ruth MacPete, DVM

There are many ways the battle against cancer in pets is being fought. Worthy organizations such as the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine Foundation, the Animal Cancer Foundation, Morris Animal Foundation, the Veterinary Cancer Society, the Winn Feline Foundation and the oncology department of your local veterinary school, support and promote cancer research. Cancer awareness wristbands and cat collars from are sold here with a portion of the sale going toward cancer research.

The Pet Animal Serum Treasury collects and archives blood from healthy and sick cats for research into cancer and other common diseases. Its goal is to promote innovative research that does not rely on using live animals. For more information about the Animal Serum Treasury, click here

If your cat has cancer, ask your veterinarian to record your cat’s medical information in the Veterinary Cancer Registry. The registry collects data and provides access for clinicians to search the database to study cancer trends and evaluate the effectiveness of various treatments. This way, you can bring meaning to a tragic event by possibly helping many other inflicted cats.
