Marduk is the name of an ancient Babylonian god. It also is the name of a Turkish Angora cat that happened to live with breeder and Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) cat-show judge B. Iris Tanner in Massachusetts. While not a god or creature of epic myth, he was a pretty entertaining little guy nonetheless. His quick wit and enterprising intelligence have managed to leave a lasting impression.
For instance, Marduk had a favorite fuzzy-mouse catnip toy, and one day he was in the mood to play. “I used to bring it with me when I showed him and have it at shows and at no other time,” Tanner says. “We had gone to a show recently, and the toy was in my pocketbook, which was on the dining room table. I was working on something at the other end of the table. He jumped up onto the table, stuck his paw into my bag, dug around and emerged with the toy in his mouth. Then he caught my eye. He realized I was watching. He reached up, closed the pocketbook lid with his paw and ran away. I swear he was trying to make me believe nothing had happened.”
