Milo, R. Brooks' 3-year-old cat, suddenly lost a lot of weight. She took Milo to the veterinary clinic for tests, where the cat first was misdiagnosed with cancer. Later, a veterinarian told Brooks that Milo's kidneys were failing; she was diagnosed with renal failure.
Brooks had the option to treat Milo's disease as best she could or to get her a new kidney. She chose the latter.
Milo was given a chance at a tenth life at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, one of the few veterinary hospitals in the United States that offer kidney transplants for cats.
