When Pam Miller started fostering barn cats from her neighborhood in 1992, she never would have guessed that it would lead her to create Raleigh, N.C.'s first no-kill shelter or that she'd help 3,600 homeless cats find permanent homes. At the time, all she knew was that she had to do something to prevent other cats from experiencing the same fate as the dead cats she used to see on the road every day. Her efforts to save those cats have changed her life and those of thousands of local felines.

"It all began when I started looking around [to find out where the cats were coming from] and went by this old farmhouse with a dilapidated barn. It looked like a scene from 'Deliverance,'" Miller says.
