Recently, while entertaining friends, my cat Fudge, who had been asleep in her bed for hours, suddenly got up, rushed over to my valuable silk Royal Tabriz Persian rug and vomited up a hairball-and-dinner combo.

That brought conversation to a halt. I hurried to mop up the mess while complaining that she had to pick that spot when there are plenty of tiled areas in the house.
