Cat Survey

Cat Survey Says More Cats Are Better Than One

A veterinarian cat survey says cats prefer the company of other cats rather than being alone.

A cat survey commissioned by the makers of Arm & Hammer products says that 80 percent of veterinarians surveyed agreed that by nature, cats are social creatures and prefer the company of other cats, rather than a solitary life.

Of the 174 veterinarians surveyed by Harris Interactive, seven out of 10 agreed that cats living in a household with a cat companion lead healthier, happier lives.

“Two cats are just as easy as one. Not only will they keep each other company, but owning two cats will provide a happier living environment,” Veterinary Behaviorist Stefanie Schwartz said in a news release issued for the cat survey.

Some cats’ bad behavior can be attributed to loneliness and such behavior is sometimes helped by the introduction of another cat into the household, more than half of the veterinarians responding to the cat survey said.

Signs that a cat is lonely can include: hair pulling, excessive grooming, excessive meowing, destructiveness and aggressive behavior when the owner leaves home.

I have always said that you should always have at least two cats. I have four and they provide me with company and great entertainment and when I am away, they pile up and sleep with each other.

This has always been my view. I always say two cats are better than one and will always have at least two kitties. Right now I have four!

Two cats are usually easier to raise especially if they are about the same age. We have 2 that are 3 years apart and different temperments but they do seem to be company for each other. They do not play together though at least not most of the time.

I have to agree that having more than one cat is better for the cats especially when you are away at work. We had one cat and I did not think she would accept any other cats. One day Reggie showed up on our deck and adopted us. It took awhile for her to accept him but when we were not looking they would play and I found them sleeping near each other. My first cat was a bit over weight but began to loose because she became active and played with the other cat. I now have 3 cats and they play and keep each other young.
