ASPCA Celebrates Animal Books

Henry Bergh Children’s Book Awards honor books about animals and the environment.

The ASPCA will honor 10 children’s book authors at the American Library Association’s annual conference in Anaheim, Calif., June 30. The animal welfare organization will present its 2007 Henry Bergh Children’s Book Awards.

The Henry Bergh Children’s Book Awards recognize authors that exhibit “exemplary handling of subject matter pertaining to animals and the environment.” The winners for 2007 are:

  • Beth Finke, for “Hanni and Beth: Safe and Sound” (Blue Marlin Publications)

  • Mary Alice Monroe, for “Turtle Summer” (Sylvan Dell Publishing)

  • Maribeth Boelts, for “Before You Were Mine” (G.P. Putnam’s Sons)

  • Victoria Miles, for “Old Mother Bear” (Chronicle Books)

  • Barbara H. Cole with Ronald Himmler, for “Anna and Natalie” (Star Bright Books)

  • Joanne Ryder, for “Toad by the Road” (Henry Holt and Company)

  • Sue Ann Alderson, for “The Eco-Diary of Kiran Singer” (Tradewind Books)

  • Robert Papp with Helen Wilbur, for “M is for Meow” (Sleeping Bear Press)

Phyllis Reynolds Naylor, author of the “Shiloh” trilogy of books, will receive the ASPCA Roger Caras Achievement Award. The award recognizes an outstanding individual or organization that has inspired children and made a contribution to the animal community through literature, actions or means.
