Cold Weather Tips for Cats

ASPCA Offers Cold Weather Tips for Cats

The animal welfare organization lists ways to keep cats safe during colder winter months.

Use these cold weather tips to keep your cat comfortable.
Winter months bring cold weather and pose unique problems for pet owners. As the temperature dips, the ASPCA offers these cold weather tips to keep cats safe and warm.

  • Keep your cat indoors.
If allowed to roam outside in cold weather, a cat could freeze, become lost or injured. An outdoor cat also can be prey to wildlife and become exposed to infectious diseases.

  • Keep your pet away from antifreeze.
The sweet taste of ethylene glycol antifreeze is a deadly temptation for cats and other pets. Make sure to thoroughly clean any antifreeze spills your pet could encounter, and consider using propylene glycol antifreeze products instead of ethylene glycol products.

  • Provide a warm sleeping spot.
Before you go to bed at night, you might turn down your thermostat, so make sure your cat has a warm place to sleep that is away from chilly drafts. A pillow or blanket will do the trick.
