Shelter Makes Room for Katrina Cats

Cats are scheduled to arrive in Tucson, Ariz., Sunday, but the shelter has no room.

A group of New Orleans cats, many of whom survived Hurricane Katrina, are scheduled to arrive at the Hermitage Cat Shelter in Tucson, Ariz., Sunday. But there’s one problem — the shelter’s already operating past capacity.

The shelter currently has 400 cats, 200 of which are considered adoptable. To make room for the incoming New Orleans cats, it’s asking area residents to adopt felines already housed at the shelter.

Even more than a year later, the shelter still is overrun with cats and dogs because of the hurricane, according to Animal Rescue of New Orleans (ARNO). Therefore, ARNO is trying to place 5,000 cats in shelters in other states around the country.

The Hermitage, a non-profit, no-cage, no-kill shelter, will be accepting an undetermined number of cats even though the shelter’s already overrun.

Anyone interested in adopting a cat or kitten can call the Hermitage at (520) 571-7839, or check the Hermitage Cat Shelter website for information on adoption days and times.
