Pet Poison Prevention

ASPCA Promotes Pet Poison Prevention

The Poison Control Center issued a warning about household hazards that can kill pets.

March 18-24 is National Poison Prevention Week and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) is reminding cat owners of common hazards found in many households.

“[This observance] gives veterinarians an opportunity to remind their clients that we want to poison-proof the house, things need to be above the counter in cabinets, and to look at the garage as well,” said ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center Senior Vice President Steven Hansen, DVM.

Harmful products that pet owners may not be aware of include coca mulch, gorilla glue, the sweetener xylitol and foods such as macadamia nuts, avocados, raisins and grapes.

Many people know how to poison-proof a home for children, but it is very different for a cat or other pet, Hansen said.

Pet owners can visit ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control Center website for more information.

This is very good. Also cat owners should know there are a lot of plants and house plants which a kitty can nibble on and are highly toxic and deadly. All types of lillies for example. I obtained a list from our vet. Where kitty is fussy about food she is interested in eating plants.
