March 18-24 is National Poison Prevention Week and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) is reminding cat owners of common hazards found in many households.
“[This observance] gives veterinarians an opportunity to remind their clients that we want to poison-proof the house, things need to be above the counter in cabinets, and to look at the garage as well,” said ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center Senior Vice President Steven Hansen, DVM.
Harmful products that pet owners may not be aware of include coca mulch, gorilla glue, the sweetener xylitol and foods such as macadamia nuts, avocados, raisins and grapes.
Many people know how to poison-proof a home for children, but it is very different for a cat or other pet, Hansen said.
Pet owners can visit ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control Center website for more information.
