Fans of Animal Planet’s “Meerkat Manor” series have watched several families of meerkats fight for survival in the Kalahari Desert. One of the most popular of the meerkats has been Flower, who became leader of her family, the Whiskers, and led them through hardships and good times. Now, Animal Planet will follow Flower’s life from start to finish in a new feature-length film entitled “Flower: Queen of the Meerkats.”
The movie will tell the stories that came before the “Meerkat Manor” series began airing on Animal Planet. Filmed on location in the African Kalahari Desert, “Flower: Queen of the Meerkats” will use “meerkam” technology and cameras attached to helicopters to introduce new vantage points and show new aspects of the meerkat way of life.
“Flower: Queen of the Meerkats” will bring to the big screen an unforgettable tale of heartbreak and joy that is as dramatic and powerful as any story from the human world,” said Clark Bunting, president of Discover Films. “Through this film, which will offer new characters, rich storylines and never-before-seen moments, moviegoers will discover what millions of viewers around the planet already love about this unparalleled and unflinching look at life deep in the African desert.”
The film is being produced by Discovery Films and Animal Planet in partnership with Oxford Scientific Films/Southern Star, Cambridge University and behavioral ecologist Professor Tim Clutton-Brock. The film is slated for release later this year.
