For 36 hours straight, more than 2,000 animal shelters from around the world joined North Shore Animal League’s largest cooperative pet event — Pet Adoptathon 2008.
The two-day adoption marathon’s goal was to find homes for as many cats and dogs as possible.
The annual family event, staged at Pet Adoptathon headquarters in Port Washington, N.Y., featured celebrity dance performances, the Purina Incredible Dog Team, face painting, raffles, sports memorabilia for auction and a grand prize — tickets to see a Broadway performance, and a year’s supply of pet food.
In addition, the animal rescue group Rescue Ink made a guest appearance to spread the word about pet owner responsibility and to speak out against animal cruelty. Other participants included shelters from Bolivia and South Africa.
Event organizers say that Pet Adoptathon 2008 helped place 600 animals in new homes. For more information, visit the North Shore Animal League America website.
