Blind Cat Relies on Other Senses

Daisy the cat finds her way around her Texas house quite well.

Daisy doesn’t play near the street anymore, not since being hit by a car five years ago. The severe head injuries Daisy sustained from that accident left her blind but didn’t steal her spirit and enjoyment of life, the Lubbock (Texas) Avalanche-Journal reports.

In fact, Daisy continues to do the things cats do, according to Kathi Robinson, Daisy’s owner. The cat runs up and down the stairs, jumps up on the counter and even stalks the birds in her backyard. Robinson credits Daisy’s ability to get around to the cat’s sharpened senses.

“I’m sure she has an excellent sense of hearing, and they say their whiskers are very sensitive,” Robinson told the Avalanche-Journal. “I’m sure she has a good sense of smell, and she knows us.”

Daisy doesn’t like to be picked up, Robinson said, as it disorients her, but the cat gladly will curl up in someone’s lap. Changes to her environment may cause Daisy to bump into things.

“When I was setting the Christmas decorations up, she had a little trouble with boxes everywhere,” Robinson said. “She did run into things and got a little mad at me about that.”

My daughter brought home a blind feral kitten. I wanted to have him put down, but checked this website and THANK GOD decided to give him a chance... wow. You'd never know he is blind. We've had him 9 years now! Thanks for all the good advice, he has been a godsend!

I have a brand new kitten which was born blind. After she adjusted to the house, she is just like my seeing cat. A cat that can see and a blind one make great learning and loving companions.

LuLu is newly blind. She seemed to have conpensated for her loss of vision the first few weeks, but now hides under the bed and doesn't use the litter box. I have kept everything the same for her. Any suggestions?

Just goes to show you that even with disabilities, you can adopt or have pets and they still have a good quality of life and are worth helping.
