| Brownie Troop No. 52005 from Hugo, Minn., donated a portion of its cookie sales to an animal shelter. |
The seven second-grade girls in Oneka Elementary Brownie Troop No. 52005 turned their annual Girl Scout Cookie sale into an opportunity to help cats and dogs in Two Harbors, Minn. Though the troop members live more than three hours away from the Lake County Humane Society, the girls wanted to help the shelter because it is so in need, Debra Nelson, the troop leader, told the Lake County (Minn.) News-Chronicle.
Nelson told the Brownies about the work of the humane society and showed them pictures of the cats and dogs waiting for new homes. After hearing about the shelter, the girls — all of them animal lovers — voted unanimously to donate a portion of their profits from cookie sales.
Carey Hogenson, who works at the Lake County Humane Society, sent the troop a wish list of items needed to help care for the homeless cats and dogs. The troop sold more than 1,500 boxes of cookies, which when combined with several monetary donations, gave the girls $175 to buy supplies for the shelter.
Last week, two of the Brownies — Brooke and Laura Nelson — accompanied their mother and troop leader Debra Nelson to the shelter to deliver cat litter, pet food, pet treats, pet toys, paper towels and laundry detergent. “Our troop did not make this donation for any kind of notoriety,” Debra Nelson said. “We just hope that others reading our story may feel prompted to help out the local animals in the shelter by making a donation also.”
