Cat Declawing

City Bans Cat Declawing

Certain other cosmetic procedures are disallowed in Norfolk, Va., as well.

The city of Norfolk, Va., has passed an ordinance that bans cat declawing and other cosmetic alterations of cats, except for medical purposes.

Microchipping, tattooing and ear tipping are not considered cosmetic alterations under the new ordinance and therefore are allowed under the new rules, which were approved by the City Council April 25.

“It shall be unlawful for any person to cosmetically alter any companion animal,” the addition to the municipal code reads in part.

The only exceptions to this are procedures certified to be medically necessary to preserve the animal’s health and safety and performed under proper anesthesia by a veterinarian licensed in Virginia.

In addition to declawing, certain other procedures, including tail docking, ear cropping and debarking (for dogs) are considered cosmetic alterations and therefore banned in the city.

I would be inclined to vacation in towns like Richmond(VA) or West Hollywood(CA) who have banned cat declawing; and inclined to boycott towns, like Durango, Colorado who condone this act of animal cruelty.

I agree with this ban. Declawing is cruel and I would never have it done to one of my animals. My cat Milo is adopted from the local shelter and he was declawed by his previous owner. He is very sensitive about his feet and not as affectionate as most cats. I believe what I have heard from some vets and vet techs, it is very painful and even under anesthesia they whimper, so I know that the poor cats feel the horrible pain.

Good for Norfolk, VA. There are plenty of alternatives to de-clawing. Too many people don't even want to look into them or bother working with their cats though.
