Cat Declawing

City Bans Cat Declawing

Certain other cosmetic procedures are disallowed in Norfolk, Va., as well.

The city of Norfolk, Va., has passed an ordinance that bans cat declawing and other cosmetic alterations of cats, except for medical purposes.

Microchipping, tattooing and ear tipping are not considered cosmetic alterations under the new ordinance and therefore are allowed under the new rules, which were approved by the City Council April 25.

“It shall be unlawful for any person to cosmetically alter any companion animal,” the addition to the municipal code reads in part.

The only exceptions to this are procedures certified to be medically necessary to preserve the animal’s health and safety and performed under proper anesthesia by a veterinarian licensed in Virginia.

In addition to declawing, certain other procedures, including tail docking, ear cropping and debarking (for dogs) are considered cosmetic alterations and therefore banned in the city.

Well first off yur cat might not be affectionate because his previous owner neglected him not because he has been declawed. My cats have all been declawed and they are very affectionate. People need to make there own decisions not let the government decide what they think they need to do. Maybe the people who declawe are doing it so the cat doesn't hurt someone with them. Let the owner decide whats right not the state or local government

Good for Norfolk! For even the most difficult cat, there are grooming bags, muzzles so they don't see what's going on and Peti Paws which can safely trim the nails as often as necessary! I live on a budget and, found these items inexpensively!

I would be inclined to vacation in towns like Richmond(VA) or West Hollywood(CA) who have banned cat declawing; and inclined to boycott towns, like Durango, Colorado who condone this act of animal cruelty.
