Cat DNA Testing Offered

CatGENES.org provides a cat DNA testing service.

Veterinarians, breeders and cat lovers seeking feline DNA testing to improve the health of cats can now turn to CatGENES.org, a cooperative effort created by the Cat Fanciers’ Association, Texas A&M University Animal Genetics Laboratory and DNA Diagnostics Inc. The new company offers prepaid sample collection kits through an online ordering system and keeps all cats’ information confidential.

CatGENES.org services provide the VeriSNP universal genetic evaluation, which scans the DNA for:

  • Parentage verification, when needed
  • Inherited diseases, including polycystic kidney disease, mucopolysaccharidoses type VI & VI mild, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
  • Albino and cinnamon-red traits
  • Identification of Siamese points, Burmese, chocolate-brown

The specific genes for additional colors, diseases and performance are currently being mapped and will be added as they become available.

One DNA sample collection kit, which costs $39, is required for each cat to be tested. Each kit contains a hair collection kit and/or two cheek swabs. Results are mailed to the customer two to three weeks after the collection kits are received by the laboratory.

This lab is ridiculous and not worth your money. I have tested over 20 cats and kittens through here and it takes FOREVER to get results back. That's not the worst part. When you call you get told they will be done at this time, but then when you call back there is always a reason its not done. I've been calling every day for 3 weeks and keep getting pushed back. I even had a kitten out of two clear parents come back as a carrier for something. I'd think any legit lab would want to get that cleared up asap so their integrity isn't an issue, not this lab, its been 5 weeks and they still can't tell me. I will be paying the extra money for the other places! If it looks too good to be true it is!

Their website indicates two tests. Swab and hair. Yet, they do not ask you to submit the hair sample. Seems fishy...

I am unsure if this would do you any good if you do not know who the parents of the cat are. It is good to know it is out there and affordable (for once). Thanks.

i was really surprised it was so affordable! when i first read the headlines what entered my mind was"oh boy how much does that cost?" i was so shocked to find it was under $40.00. What a bargain!!! To be able to check for inhereted diseases so cheaply is fantastic! This was a great informative article!
