Cat Rescue Organization Asks for Farmers’ Help

Nonprofit group seeks barn homes for sterilized and vaccinated feral cats.

Cat Rescue Organization Asks for Farmers' Help
Farmers are sought to provide barn homes for feral cats.
Alley Cat Rescue is seeking to team up with farmers who would like to help give feral cats a chance for a better life by providing them a barn to call their own.

The nonprofit rescue organization will spay, neuter and vaccinate all cats. Participants must agree to keep cats confined for the first two weeks, so they are more likely to consider their new barn home. Afterward, the farmers agree to provide the cats shelter from the elements along with food and water. In turn, participants are rewarded with “mouse patrollers” who will keep their barns free from rodents, Alley Cat Rescue officials said.

Feral cats are animals that have never lived with humans or have lived apart from humans for so long that they’re not socialized to people and therefore are difficult to place in homes, according to the nonprofit. The barns allow them to live in the environment they’re accustomed to while receiving shelter from inclement weather as well as meals from barn caretakers.

It is a great idea to place feral cats into barns. This arrangement works for the farmer who will not have to worry about mice and for the cats who have a safe home.
I don't think that two weeks as safe keeping time is enough. The confiment incages should be more like 3-4 weeks depending on the relationship between the new owner and cats.
I am one of the coordinators for barn cats for Talbot Humane (Easton, MD) and we had great experience with this arrangement.

I think it's a great way to give cats a home with regular food and shelter that they would not otherwise have. The optimum place for a cat is someplace where they can live inside and be given lots of love, but this is better than living totally on their own, and they will be spayed so they won't be contributing to the population explosion. But,feral cats CAN become an indoor cat and accept it well. We have adopted feral cats (and yes they were really feral). Even those that still don't care much for humans (us) still find their own niche in the household and find kitty pals in the household, learn to use the tray, and thrive in their own way. Also, at least half of the feral cats we have taken in over the years, with much patience and love on our part, have became cuddlers who love to be petted and spend time with their humans.
