Cat Shelter to Open Cat Food Bank

The Cat Adoption Team of Sherwood, Ore., will provide cat food for pet owners facing tough economic times.

Posted: May 28, 2008 2 a.m. EDT

The Cat Adoption Team (CAT) of Sherwood, Ore., is seeking donations of unopened, unexpired cat and kitten food for its cat food bank. Starting June 1, the cat-only shelter will provide food for pet owners affected by the recent changes in the economy, The Portland (Ore.) Tribune and KOIN News report.

“If receiving a bag of cat food will help a family keep their pet in the home, then the Cat Adoption Team wants to be able to provide that family with the food,” said Aaron Asmus, CAT executive director. “As the cost of basic necessities increase, CAT knows many pet owners will face hard decisions. The Cat Adoption Team hopes this cat food bank will make it easier for families to keep their companion cats.”

The food bank is intended to help pet owners. Feral cat caregivers and rescue organizations will not be eligible to receive the food.

After June 1, the food bank will be open from 12 to 4 p.m. the first Sunday of each month at CAT’s Sherwood location. For more information about the Cat Adoption Team and the cat food bank, visit the group’s website.

Excellent! We need more cat groups to get in on the action in this regard. There are a lot of senior citizens who cannot afford to feed their cats regularly.

I think this is a GREAT idea, & hope other agencies will follow suit. As long as there are guidelines so people truly in need are the ones taking advantage, why not?

I hope this will make a difference so the owners can keep their kitties without such a hardship.
