| A black cat like the one shown here was rescued from a highway by California Highway Patrol officers. |
A 2-year-old black cat owes her life to two California Highway Patrol officers. Golden Gate Division Chief Teresa Becher and Officer Dave Gasking came upon the cat sitting on a post in the freeway’s center divider last week while driving west on Interstate 80 in Dixon, Calif. The officers pulled over to grab the cat before she could jump into traffic, the Vallejo (Calif.) Times-Herald reports.
The officers used an EMT bag to hold the cat while they drove her to the Solano County SPCA. Staff at that facility had her transported to Solano County Animal Care Services in Fairfield.
Ron Whitfield, Animal Care Services manager, told the Times-Herald that the cat is very friendly and was recently spayed, indicating that she is most likely someone’s pet. Though the cat may have been struck by a car at one point, she is doing fine now, Whitfield said.
The shelter will hold the cat for six days before putting her up for adoption, allowing the owner to come forward and claim her. If her owner doesn’t show up, a new owner is already waiting in the wings: Chief Becher, one of the cat’s rescuers, would like to adopt the black cat.
Anyone with information about a black cat missing in the area of the Pedrick Road overpass should call the Solano County Animal Care Services at 707-784-1356.
