Chuck the Cat “Works” at the Park

Employees of the Bedford Parks Department in Bedford, Ind., adopted the orange tabby.

When he was just a kitten, Chuck the cat showed up in the maintenance building of the Bedford Parks Department in July 2006, an uninvited guest who didn’t realize he wasn’t wanted. “We didn’t plan on keeping him,” Parks Department employee Ronnie Blake told the Times-Mail (Indiana). “But, he kept coming back.”

Now Chuck is considered an “employee.” His uniform consists of a cat collar and identification tags. He spends most of his time in a maintenance building, taking frequent naps on the couch there. An upstanding citizen, Chuck is licensed and neutered, according to another employee, Bill Tincher. “He’s legitimate. Me, Steve Ford and Ronnie pretty much take care of him.”

Chuck’s duties as maintenance-building cat mostly center on catching mice — a job he completes competently. “We haven’t had a mouse since he’s been here,” Blake said. “He’s a good cat.”

When he isn’t performing his job duties, Chuck likes to play with dogs — and his fellow employees. “He’s usually pretty frisky in the morning,” Tincher said. “He likes to play.”
