Contaminated Pet Food

Rat Poison Blamed for Contaminated Pet Food

The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets says lab tests discovered the toxin.

Rat poison found in the pet food recalled by Menu Foods Inc., last week might be to blame for the recent deaths of dogs and cats across the United States and Canada, according to a report today by the Associated Press.

The report said that state laboratory tests this week found rodent poison in the food, according to a N.Y. State Department of Agriculture and Markets spokesperson. The agency is expected to unveil its findings later today.

Nearly 100 brands of pet food, including those carried by Wal-Mart, Safeway and well-known name brands Iams and Eukanuba, were affected by the March 16 recall that has caused at least 16 confirmed pet deaths, which is a number that is expected to climb.

A list of the recalled brands is available here

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is still investigating the situation.

Owners of pets affected by the recalled pet foods who wish to report the incident should contact the Food and Drug Administration through its website to find the FDA complaint coordinator in their state.

Rat poison - that does not sound like a mistake happened. It sounds to me like the food may have been purposely tampered with. Either that - or somebody was trying to kill rats nearby and it somehow contaminated the food. Either way, quality control needs a lot of work. This must not happen again.

I can't believe that there was actually rat poison in the food. How does something like that happen?
I have no idea how to even AVOID Menu Foods. They have their hand in EVERYTHING. Even a company like IAMS who insists they make everything in their own plants.

This is so sad. It hurts reading all those posts by pet owners who were affected by the poisoned food.

I never have trusted commercial pet food. This is the reason why I buy only organic and make home-made meals for my dog and cats. There are only a few brands that I could recommend - Organix, Newman's Own Organic and Pet Guard Organic. The little extra you pay is worth it if it keeps your pet healthy.

People that really care about their pets need to read this article from the Animal Protection Institute..."What's Really in Pet Food" http://www.api4animals. org. Also read the article, "Food Not Fit for a Pet" by holistic vet Wendell Belfield... http://www.belfield. com/article3.html

When looking for pet food, check out the company first to find out where they source all their ingredients. For instance, I would never buy food for myself or my pets that was produced in China. Their food standards are extremely poor. It doesn't surprise me at all that the grain imported from China was contaminated. Read this article on pesticides in China... http://www.organicconsume- rs.org/toxic/chinapestici- des012103.cfm AND this article... http://simonworld. mu.nu/archives/115324. php. Remember, you get what you pay for, so BUYER BEWARE!

What most pet food companies, like those that Menu foods produces, contain the cheapest ingredients available for the highest profit.

If reading the article published by the Animal Protection Institute www.api4animals.org doesn't completely change your whole outlook on the pet food industry, read this..."Food Pets Die For" http://www.homevet. com/petcare/foodbook.html AND http://www.earthisland. org/eijournal/fall97/fe_f- all97petfood.html.

The whole way they produce pet food reminds me of Solient Green! I't appalling! Food not fit for any living creature.
