Easter celebrations are supposed to be enjoyable, but with all the holiday joys come potential safety hazards that can hurt or kill a cat.
Safety and Health Expert Debra Holtzman J.D, M.A, author of the book The Safe Baby: A Do-It-Yourself Guide to Home Safety, suggests these Easter safety tip for cats:
- Keep chocolate bunnies away from your cat.
Chocolate is toxic and sometimes fatal for animals, so make sure your cat doesn’t get its paws on any chocolate Easter treats.
- Keep Easter lilies away from your cat.
All parts of the lily plant are considered toxic to cats, and consuming even small amounts can cause severe poisoning. Cat owners should be aware of the dangers of lily ingestion and remove them from their cats' access.
- Keep a close eye on inappropriate foods for cats.
Onions, grapes and raisins can be toxic to pets, Holtzman said.
- Keep Easter eggs away from your cat.
Eggs should be hidden in places that are protected from cats and other bacteria sources.
- Keep all alcohol away from your cat.
Alcohol affects cats more than adults, so even small amounts of alcohol can be dangerous. Spiked drinks also should be kept out of your cat’s reach. In addition, all empty and partially empty cups should be removed as soon as possible because they can contain trace amounts of alcohol.
