FDA Approves Insulin for Diabetic Cats

A product called Vetsulin now can be used to treat cats with diabetes mellitus.

Posted: April 23, 2008 2 a.m. EDT

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Intervet Inc.’s Vetsulin (porcine insulin zinc suspension) for the reduction of hyperglycemia and hyperglycemia-associated clinical signs in cats with diabetes mellitus.

The insulin was previously only indicated for treating diabetic dogs.

Vetsulin is marketed outside the United States as Caninsulin, which had already been approved for the treatment of diabetes mellitus in cats in several other countries.

Intervet is based in Millsboro, Del.
