The L.A. Department of Animal Services hopes to benefit senior citizens and shelter animals with its new program.

Free Senior Pets for Senior Citizens in Los Angeles
The L.A. Department of Animal Services hopes to pair senior citizens with older cats.
The L.A. Department of Animal Services is launching a program in hopes of connecting seniors of different species.

The Seniors for Seniors program matches pets, ages 7 and older, with senior citizens, ages 62 and older, who are then allowed to adopt the pet free of charge. The pet will be spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. The program begins at city animal shelters and off-site adoption events Jan. 26.

Older pets housed at shelters are often overlooked, but typically make great companions for seniors as the majority of senior pets are housebroken and are calmer than their younger counterparts. Seniors benefit, too, as the L.A. Department of Animal Services provides several reasons that pet ownership boosts seniors’ health, backed by various studies. They are:

Pets Lower Blood Pressure — People older than 40 who own pets have lower blood pressure than those who don’t, and talking to pets reduces blood pressure.

Decreased Depression — Seniors with pets are less likely to get depressed than those who don’t.
More Active — Seniors with pets tend to go for more walks and are generally more active than those who don’t have pets.

Pets Ease Loss — Those who own a pet and suffer the loss of a spouse are less likely to experience deterioration in their health following the stressful event.

In addition, pets help seniors ward off loneliness, take better care of themselves and give them a sense of security knowing that someone they love and trust is always nearby.

I totally agree that older people should have pets to keep them company, this program is great.

I think it's terrific!! I would like to see more cities do that, like my hometown of Mansfield, OH. I'm a senior (65)with 4 cats. Two of them are senior cats, one is 12 and one is 10. The other two are 4. One of the four year olds (Spanky)will not accept Needles (12) and give her grief. She lives in the ceiling of a room in my basement. I don't know if she ever gets down or not. Her litter box, food and water are where she can get to them without being waylaid by Spanky. I feel so bad for her. I would like to find a home where she would be the only cat, but at her age, I don't think she would be able to adapt to new surroundings. Do you know that here in my town, that people with dogs cannot rent an apt. or house? Even cats are questionable. Talk about discrimination!!

I wish my neighborhood would do something like this, all they do is say no because of allergies.
