Helen the Kitten Needs a Home

The deaf and blind kitten, currently in the care of Dr. Patty Khuly, enjoys quiet lap time.

Helen, a deaf and blind kitten, enjoys quiet human companionship.
Helen lives in veterinary hospital limbo, healthy enough to go to a new home but without an owner to pick her up. The black and white kitten looks forward to mealtimes, and trills her delight when she receives soft, gentle touches. Patty Khuly, VMD, recognizes the deaf, blind cat’s loving nature and hopes to find a home for her soon.

“Helen is a serene cat,” Khuly said. “She is tremendously accepting of people who take an interest in her and will sit in their laps for hours. Someone who loves a supremely quiet cat would be thrilled by Helen’s subtleties.”

Helen arrived at the Sunset Animal Clinic in Miami, Fla., when one of Khuly’s longtime clients found the kitten in her backyard. It soon became obvious that the kitten was blind, deaf and most likely suffering from some type of head trauma. The client’s preteen daughter named the kitten “Helen” after Helen Keller, and the kitten took up residence at Khuly’s animal clinic.

After about a week, Helen’s condition improved. She can find and eat her food without assistance and has learned how to find and use her litterbox, Khuly said.

“Mostly, Helen requires a controlled environment with all her tools in close proximity,” Khuly explained. “In any small room — a laundry room or bathroom — Helen would be comfortable. When not in her normal space, Helen is so comfortable being held and stroked on someone’s lap.”

Khuly would love to place Helen in a new home where her quiet, sweet ways are appreciated. “A quiet home with no boisterous dogs, children or domineering cats would be ideal,” she said.
