As you prepare for a night of romance with your sweetheart, keep in mind your cat’s safety. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals offers tips to make Valentine’s Day special — and safe for your pet.
Remember that many varieties of lilies are highly toxic to cats. If you or your sweetheart are presented with these flowers, make sure your cat can’t get near them.
Don’t share that box of chocolates with your cat. While dogs usually experience more severe symptoms from ingesting chocolate, the sweet substance can cause gastrointestinal upset in cats, too.
Soft candlelight can add a touch of romance to a home-cooked meal, but don’t let your pets near the flames. Don’t leave lit candles unattended, and make sure your cat can’t get too close to the flames.
A glass of wine adds a romantic touch to your special evening, but make sure your cat doesn’t have a taste. If ingested, wine can cause many symptoms in your cat, from vomiting and diarrhea to metabolic disturbances.
