The 13th Annual Spay Day USA, held Feb. 27, brought together pet lovers across the United States in a common goal: Encourage pet owners to have their cats and dogs spayed and neutered. Events took place throughout the month of February, aiming to draw pet owners and their companion animals into clinics for the surgeries.
Shelters used many methods to make the surgeries more appealing to pet owners. Some lowered their fees while others donated the surgeries. Here’s a look at several programs from across the country:
- The Redwood Pet Hospital in California donated 10 spays and neuters.
- The Florida Keys SPCA donated spay and neuter surgeries as well as rabies vaccinations.
- The Creekside Veterinary Hospital in Bozeman, Mont., offered its services to seniors and low-income families.
- The Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center offered discounts to low-income families.
- The Spay-Neuter Assistance Program in Houston provided feline neuter surgeries for a nickel.
- The Neffsville Animal Clinic in Lancaster, Pa., spayed and neutered stray cats brought in by clients.
Spay Day USA was established by the Doris Day Animal League in 1995, which combined its operations with the Humane Society for the United States in 2006.
