In 2006, the Humane Society of Utah (HSU) placed 6,116 cats and dogs in new homes, a 3.9 percent increase above the record set in 2005, shelter personnel report. The humane society also spayed or neutered nearly 10,000 cats and dogs, the most the shelter has done in a single year. This number also beats the record set in 2005.
“We attribute these successes to the many programs we have designed and implemented to increase the animals’ appeal and availability,” said Gene Baierschmidt, the Humane Society of Utah’s executive director. “We are continually exploring even more ways of finding homes for adoptable pets.”
HSU said it currently finds homes for close to 90 percent of its adoptable animals, and the possibility of eliminating euthanasia among its shelter animals is growing.
“We’re narrowing the gap,” Baierschmidt said. “Spaying and neutering is the answer, and we’re extremely gratified to see that the public is getting this message.”
