| Marty the cat will move to a new home at the Mount Washington Observatory in New Hampshire. |
In a landslide victory, Marty the cat won the Mount Washington Mascot Primary in New Hampshire to become the next feline mascot for the weather station. More than 8,000 people cast their votes in the mascot contest, with Marty capturing 53 percent. Wilson, a red tabby, received 26 percent of the vote, while Sarah, a black and white beauty, garnered 21 percent.
All three contenders currently live at the Conway Area Humane Society. Shelter staff, working with observatory employees, carefully selected the feline candidates. “The Mascot Primary put our organization and the animals we care for in the limelight,” Virginia Moore, the shelter’s interim executive director, said. “We’re absolutely thrilled by the incredible voter response.”
Marty, a 2-year-old longhaired black cat, ran on a platform of “free cheeseburgers and fish heads for everyone.” He replaces Nin, who left the observatory post last month due to health issues. As “Summit Cat,” Marty will take over duties, such as curling up on the occasional lap.
As for Wilson and Sarah? “Keep in mind that these two minor celebrities are still in need of loving homes after this is all said and done,” Scot Henley, the observatory’s executive director, said. To learn more about these two cats, visit the Conway Area Humane Society’s website.
