Mississippi Animal Shelter Makes Strides

Adoption rates and spay/neuter surgeries are up at the Humane Society of South Mississippi.

As a member of the ASPCA Mission: Orange target community of Gulfport, Miss., the Humane Society of South Mississippi has made a commitment to reduce euthanasia rates and increase adoption numbers. This week, the ASPCA shared the accomplishments the shelter has made so far.

In the three-month period from May through July 2007, adoptions at the humane society increased by 11 percent. The number of pets reunited with their owners was up by 24 percent. The volume of spay and neuter surgeries was up by 78 percent.

“We are thrilled with the recent successes we have had at the adoption center,” said Tara High, executive director of the Humane Society of South Mississippi. “We have been working extremely hard on a local level to implement positive changes in animal welfare, and are proud to be an ASPCA Mission: Orange target community.”

ASPCA Mission: Orange was launched in January 2007 in an effort to create “humane communities” and eliminate the need to euthanize adoptable animals. For more information on the campaign, visit the ASPCA website.
