New Spay/Neuter Clinic Targets Cats, Pit Bulls

The Maryland SPCA is expanding a spay/neuter program to target areas where the need is greatest.

New Spay/Neuter Clinic Targets Cats, Pit Bulls
Low-income households in Maryland will qualify for reduced spay/neuter fees for kittens, cats and pit-bull-type dog breeds.
The Maryland Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) is expanding its current spay/neuter program and will open a clinic to specifically serve cats and pit-bull-type dog breeds living in low-income households.

The clinic builds on the Maryland SPCA’s current program, which altered more than 7,000 pets in 2007 and includes more than 500 feral cats that were spayed or neutered through a partnership with feral cat colony caretakers. The 2008 efforts will focus on areas where the Maryland SPCA sees the greatest need.

“Cats and pit bulls present special challenges for animal shelters,” said Aileen Gabbey, Maryland SPCA executive director. “This will make a real difference in saving animals’ lives in the community and in improving the health and safety of Baltimore.”

The program is targeting cats because they reproduce quickly — too fast to find homes for all of them — and is targeting pit bulls because the breed often remains in shelters for extended periods of time.

Low-income households will qualify for reduced spay/neuter fees. For details, visit the Maryland SPCA website.

i think that the SPCA is doing the right thing by targeting these specific issues; they are targeting the root of the problem. I hope that more places start to do this, or expand the program already available.
