Avocado Dangerous to Cats

Avocado Ingestion Dangerous to Cats

The fruit’s leaves, seeds and bark contain a toxin unhealthy for pets.

While there are a few foods that both humans and pets can enjoy, some foods that are healthy for us can be dangerous to cats and other animal companions. One example is the avocado.

“Avocado leaves, fruit, seeds and bark contain a toxic principle known as persin. The Guatemalan variety, which is the most common variety found in stores, appears to be the most problematic,” according to Dana Farbman, CVT, of the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center.

The primary concern is with gastrointestinal irritation, such as vomiting and diarrhea. Typically, these effects are seen in animals that have ingested significant quantities of fruit or branches.

If you suspect that your cat has eaten avocado — or any other potentially dangerous substance — call your veterinarian or the Poison Control Center’s emergency hotline at (888) 426-4435 for 24-hour telephone assistance.

For more information on poison prevention, visit the ASPCA online.

My cat Snickers is 1 yrs old and he eats just about anything. I gave him less than a teaspoon of avocado--actually he took it. But he hasn't had an adverse effects yet. I assume it just matter how much of it any cat ingests which determines whether it'll make them sick or worse.

A six pound cat of mine died in my arms within an hour or two after consuming about 2 teaspoons or so of avocado fruit. He did not vomit or have diarrhea, just walked like he was drunk. I googled avocado and cats and found out it is fatally toxic. I could tell it was too late. I put him in my lap, stroking him as he looked into my eyes one final time while stretching out his paw toward my face and then he slumped in my lap, fully unresponsive in any way, however, continued to breathe for another few minutes.

My cat, Duckie, loves avocado. I have to fight him off just to get a bite in! I have seen no adverse effects to his health, but he also doesn't eat a whole lot of it. The article seemed to me to say that eating a lot of the fruit would be harfmul; Duckie weighs 12 pounds and eats a teaspoon of avocado only occasionally. Like the previous poster said, all new foods should be cautiously introduced to our beloved pets. A side note: Duckie also loves bananas, tangerines, mangoes, tomatoes, soy bacon, and dislikes fish!

I am not sure about this opinion, but if you live in an area where avocado's are not accustom to growing then it is possible that this could make you kitty sick. My cat Sunset loves the avocado meat and we make it a point to to give her a slice of avocado every time we buy them which is about 3 for 4 times a week. She is 8 and of the few times we have been to the Vet, none has been regarding avocado sickness. Her love for the green fruit even prompted us to find a Cat food made with Avocados called Avoderm. She has been eating this for about two years now and her last check up came back clean and healthy as of January 2010.

But just like humans, what may be good for one cat may not be good for another. My advice: before you introduce any new food to your cat make sure you check with your local vet first. Our cat's ancestry may have allowed avocado's into their gene system as a way to combat hunger when no food was available to them since Avocado's are plentful Los Angeles and our cat was a feral kitty before we got her.
