Animal Sanctuary to Close

Animal Sanctuary Faces Closure

Facility cited for not adhering to zoning regulations.

The Fallbrook Animal Sanctuary in San Diego County, Calif., which currently houses numerous cats and kittens, says it may have to close in the near future because of zoning regulation violations.

“Even though we rented our present location with the understanding it would be a shelter, we have now been told that the location we are using is not zoned for this use and that we will have to move and/or relocate the animals,” according to a statement issued by Friends of the Fallbrook Animal Sanctuary.

The sanctuary says it has taken in, housed, rehabilitated and re-homed more than 500 animals since 2002. Neither the rural town of Fallbrook nor the adjacent area of Bonsall, which are located about 55 miles northeast of San Diego, are serviced by other animal shelters.

“There are numerous animals that need our help and deserve a second chance, and the people of our community deserve the service we provide as well,” the sanctuary’s statement continues.

The animal sanctuary is seeking donations and is searching for properly-zoned (O, R, or T designation) property in the Bonsall, Fallbrook or Rainbow areas to rent, lease or lease option.

Sanctuary officials can be contacted at dcatnip@cox.net, (760) 685-3533 or (760) 518-6024. For more information on the facility, or to see pictures of cats and kittens available for adoption, visit its website.

Thank you for this important article, and it is to be hoped that the powers that be will reconsider, especially in light of the facility's having qualified for the original lease on the property and being the sole such facility serving these communities. A valuable service is being performed, that would be lost if they lose this property. However, if they are unable to stay, it is to be hoped that this coverage will alert others to their plight and that an alternate site will become available within the allotted amount of time for relocation.
