Pet Charity Tournament

Charity Tournament to Help Katrina Pets

Gamers will play Madden ’07 to raise money to buy pet supplies.

A Myrtle Beach, S.C., man who helped bring relief to pets in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 has organized a video game tournament to raise money to buy supplies for cats and other hurricane-affected pets.

The Myrtle Beach Madden '07 charity tournament will be held Monday nights beginning Oct. 16 at Coastal Ale House in Myrtle Beach for Xbox 360 video game enthusiasts.

David Barry, the pet charity tournament organizer, plans to take eight players each Monday night at $25 per entry, let them play down to one winner and repeat the process for eight weeks. In the ninth week, the winners from the previous eight weeks will play for a new Xbox 360.

“Madden ‘07 players are a pretty passionate group. When they play, they are their favorite team or their favorite player. I just thought if you could harness that passion and use it for something good, you could have a huge impact,” Barry told his hometown newspaper, the Myrtle Beach, S.C., Sun News.

This isn’t the first time Barry’s raised money to help animal victims of hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Last year, while working as a courier, Barry collected donations for animals during his route and, along with a friend who’s a Louisiana native, personally delivered them to the affected Gulf Coast area, according to the Sun News.
