It’s been nearly three weeks since 295 cats and dogs arrived at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah, after a long plane ride from Beirut, Lebanon. The animals are growing more accustomed to their temporary homes, shelter staff say, meaning they are one step closer to being adopted by new owners.
Before they can leave the shelter to live with their new families, though, they must be spayed and neutered. During the next few weeks, a mobile spay and neuter trailer will park near the temporary quarters erected for the animal immigrants. The animals will rotate through the trailer for surgery and recovery, recuperating as long as necessary in the trailer’s quarters.
When fully recovered, the animals can begin to join their new homes. Once all the animals have moved out of the temporary quarters, staff will begin packing up the rescue center, storing it until the next time large numbers of pets need human intervention.
