About 300 pedigreed cats representing 42 breeds competed in the two-day event. The best of those breeds went on to compete in the grand finale, the Best of the Best. The competition marked the 100th birthday of the Cat Fanciers’ Association.

Cats are judged by how well they meet the 100-point written breed standard, temperament, grooming and presentation, according to Allene Tartaglia, CFA executive director. The winning cat gets a silver trophy, supply of Iams catfood, a basket of CFA-brand toys, a Centennial Limited Edition Sturdi Carrier and the honor of being Best in Show.

Walter Hutzler, an allbreed judge of New York, judged the 42 cats that competed for the top title. He has been a judge since 1971 and bred Maine Coons, Burmese and Ocicats.

An American Bobtail longhair male, Grand Champion A Bebop Tail Yeti of Nudawnz, of Ottawa, Ohio, was named First Runner Up. A blue Abyssinian female, Grand Champion RW Zehnder’s BBC Late Night, of Marquette, Mich., was named Second Runner Up.

Congratulations to Deydream, the Manx. I don't think a silver trophy, some cat food, and a cat carrier is excessive. In fact, a majority of those items will help the winner to EAT and go to the vet. People should complain about the dessert that costs $25,000 right in New York, among other newsworthy items. Nevertheless, to each their own. Once again, Deydream--you're beautiful!!!

WAHOOOOO! A calico shorthair won! What a fabulous prize! I've been owned by calico shorthair cats for more than 50 years, so this is wonderful news!

why in the world would people spend all the time and money on a cat, when people are straving, need ffod and shelter just outside the doors of Madison square Garden?
