Last summer, Best Friends Animal Society traveled to Pahrump, Nev., to help Nye Country animal control officials care for more than 800 cats suffering from the effects of institutional hoarding. While many of the cats have found new homes, Best Friends hopes to place 75 of the remaining cats through The Best Friends Across America Kitty Tour adoption events.
The first stop on the tour proved a success. Best Friends set up at the Camelback PetSmart in Phoenix Jan. 18-20. Local news channel ABC 15 promoted the event, and many potential pet owners stopped by. In the end, 15 cats went home with new families.
“On a weekend where there were some big football playoff games, 15 cats adopted was excellent,” said Danielle Aymar, Best Friends adoption manager. “The original plan for Best Friends Across America was 75 cats taken to seven cities … if we had adopted out 15 cats in each city, we would have had an empty truck by the time we left Memphis, our fifth city on the tour.”
Some highlights of the adoption event included the moment when a woman with Alzheimer’s bonded with Hillary the cat, who will give the woman companionship. Another woman who recently lost her husband found the perfect feline companion with Clover. And Kimber, a cat who doesn’t like to be around other cats, went home with a woman who has the perfect home situation for the Siamese beauty.
“Phoenix was a great maiden voyage for Best Friends Across America,” Aymar said. “We hope to resume the tour in the next few months.”
