New School Mascot

Schools Gets New Mascot, Cougar Gets Financial Support

A New Jersey university adds a new satellite campus and pledges its support to a cougar housed at a local zoo to honor mascot and new location.

Kean University established a satellite campus about 60 miles south of its main location, and in honor of their mascot, a new cougar joined the Kean University team.

The college opened its satellite campus at Ocean County College and partnered with the Associated Humane Societies and the Popcorn Park Zoo to adopt a cougar named Sandy to represent the new campus. Through the partnership, the school plans to raise money through a variety of channels and donate $1,500 per year to the zoo to assist with the cougar’s exhibit and care.

To ensure the safety of the cougar and the people around the cat, Sandy will not leave the zoo for events, although university officials might organize limited special events at the zoo, according to the Associated Humane Societies.

“We are happy that the Kean University Cougars wish to call one of these majestic beauties their own,” says Roseann Trezza, executive director for the Associated Humane Societies. “Even more so, we are thrilled that they want to call attention to these animals through fundraising and public awareness activities at the zoo.”

The university sponsors two other cougars, Scout and Sage, at a zoo near the main campus.
