Wisconsin Cat Shelter Sponsors Spay Day

Low-cost spay/neuter surgeries offered at Touched By a Paw in Whitewater on May 23.

For more than a year, Touched By a Paw Cat Rescue and Shelter has provided low-cost spay and neuter services to the residents of Walworth County, Wis. On Friday, May 23, the shelter will sponsor another Spay Day at its facility in Whitewater. Pet owners and feral cat caregivers need pay only $40 for the surgeries, reports the Walworth County News.

The shelter’s goal in sponsoring the Spay Day, held the fourth Friday of every month, is to reduce pet overpopulation and help control the colonies of feral cats in the community.

“There are a lot of feral and free-roaming cats,” said Lela Schuster, vice president and spay/neuter coordinator for Touched By a Paw. “Those are high-priority; they’re just breeding at will.”

Schuster said the shelter spays or neuters about 450 cats per year. “At Spay Day, we get between 30 and 40 cats … two-thirds to three-fourths of the cats are from the community,” she explained.

“There are so many people who want to do the right thing for their animals or stray animals, and they don’t have the means,” Schuster continued. “Just those few things — getting fixed and vaccinated — make a huge difference in the health of that individual cat.”
